The latest project is being crafted by A&R Atelier, the studio founded by Ed Annunziata.
Boris Vallejo / SegaEd Annunziata, the mind behind Ecco the Dolphin, previously hinted at his vision to bring back the first two titles with modern enhancements while developing a fresh follow-up. Now, Ecco the Dolphin: Complete, revealed by Annunziata’s studio A&R Atelier, realizes that earlier concept. While a launch window remains unconfirmed, A&R Atelier describes the project as “the complete, definitive Ecco the Dolphin experience, created by the people who made the originals,” uniting the remastered entries with the new installment.
Complete features “all versions of Ecco the Dolphin and Ecco: The Tides of Time” alongside “a brand-new contemporary Ecco game.” According to the developer, the package will offer graphical upgrades, “built-in speedrunning support, achievements and leaderboards,” and the option to design custom courses using existing level data. Although the A&R Atelier reveal lacked gameplay footage or platform specifics, the official Ecco the Dolphin website features a countdown timer that hints at upcoming details.
Annunziata’s path to this project was marked by legal hurdles; he sued Sega in 2013 to reclaim the Ecco the Dolphin IP, the same year his Kickstarter for The Big Blue}, a spiritual successor to Ecco the Dolphin, fell short of its funding goal. Sega and Annunziata eventually resolved their legal dispute in 2016, a settlement that likely paved the way for Ecco the Dolphin: Complete to come to fruition.
