The chipmaker provides OEMs with an alternative to alleviate VRAM limitations.

NVIDIA is introducing an updated iteration of its 5070 graphics processor designed for mobile systems. According to a blog post detailing the latest Game Ready Driver update, the manufacturer confirmed that its partners will soon introduce laptop models equipped with the RTX 5070 featuring 12GB of video memory, supplementing the existing 8GB variant available since the 50-series debut.

“Demand for GeForce RTX remains strong, and memory supply is constrained. In order to maximize memory availability, we are releasing the GeForce RTX 5070 Laptop GPU 12GB configuration with 24Gb G7 memory. This gives our partners access to an additional pool of memory to complement the 16Gb G7 supply that currently ships with most GeForce GPUs,” NVIDIA stated.

The initial wave of laptops featuring the 12GB RTX 5070 is expected to hit the market in June, with major OEMs such as ASUS, Lenovo, and MSI anticipated to include this configuration as an option in select devices. While NVIDIA has not officially announced pricing, NotebookCheck reports suggest these units could be priced similarly to the RTX 5070 Ti models. Currently, a 5070 Ti system like the Acer Predator Helios Neo 16S AI can cost up to $2,650, depending on RAM configurations. However, the new 12GB 5070 laptops are likely to be more affordable, as manufacturers may pair them with lower RAM capacities.

NVIDIA has not yet disclosed the complete specifications for the 12GB RTX 5070, but confirmed it utilizes 24Gb G7 memory rather than the 16GB G7 found in previous models. These memory types are produced using distinct manufacturing processes: the new variant employs 3GB modules, whereas the older version uses 2GB ones. Both types are sourced from suppliers like Samsung and Micron, who have improved production consistency recently. However, unless NVIDIA has redesigned the 5070 with a wider 192-bit bus interface—considered unlikely—the new model will not access memory at the same speed as the RTX 5070 Ti or higher-tier GPUs. While this may not significantly impact most gaming scenarios, it means the 12GB version is not a straightforward upgrade based solely on VRAM capacity.
