TT Games aims to introduce a fresh, expansive Gotham City and enhanced combat mechanics that echo the beloved Batman: Arkham franchise, all while maintaining the signature Lego charm and straightforward gameplay in the upcoming Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight. The Lego video game lineup has consistently offered more than just lighthearted action and clever riddles, often delivering surprisingly inventive twists on beloved characters.
Prior to the May 22 launch, I experienced several missions that followed Batman navigating a humorous, toy-inspired version of Gotham’s chaotic nightlife, where numerous villains disrupt the dark knight and his companions. Alongside reliving famous Batman film scenes reimagined with playful toy aesthetics, I witnessed a more refined and ambitious approach to open-world Lego gaming.
Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight recounts Batman’s origin story through a vibrant, whimsical Lego perspective. Set in an open-world Gotham City filled with crimes to thwart, collectibles to gather, and mysteries to unravel, players will expand Batman’s legacy across different periods of his history, incorporating elements from various films and legendary comic arcs.
Unlike the 2008 original Lego Batman, Legacy of the Dark Knight serves as a comprehensive adventure detailing Batman’s ascent in Gotham City. This narrative unfolds across main chapters inspired by numerous Batman films and comic storylines, including 2022’s The Batman, 1995’s Batman Forever, and subtle references to Batman: The Animated Series.
Jonathan Smith, head of development at TT Games, noted that nearly two decades of creating Lego games have equipped the studio with a deep understanding of how to adapt classic characters into the Lego universe. “This is the first game where we’ve been truly able to weave together the entire history of Batman’s stories into a single, narrative-driven adventure,” Smith explained. He continued, “We’ve been driven by the character and the rich storytelling that preceded us. From a Lego games perspective, we consistently strive to inject fresh humor and enjoyment into every aspect of gameplay and narrative.”
A more profound Lego Batman experience
In the traditional Lego video game format, you and a co-player can explore various levels, gathering Lego bricks and studs to unlock upgrades and costumes, battling foes with melee attacks and gadgets, and solving puzzles using character-specific abilities. It remains a classic action-platformer but emphasizes comedic, cartoonish action with Lego figures. The combat system, which adopts Arkham-style free-flow mechanics, complements the Lego style well. I particularly appreciated the inclusion of Adam West-era Batman humor to make battles even more delightfully absurd.
The initial mission I played centered on Batman’s early crime-fighting days—a reimagining of the Iceberg Lounge scene from 2022’s The Batman, often considered the darkest Batman film. Surprisingly, the Lego interpretation of the Matt Reeves film succeeded by embracing the inherent silliness of a masked vigilante infiltrating a club to battle henchmen. Commissioner Gordon joins Batman in this sequence, providing humorous moments as they construct Lego safe-cracking devices to breach barriers and access deeper parts of the lounge.
The level felt like a classic Lego video game experience, yet Legacy of the Dark Knight expands upon it by drawing inspiration from the Batman: Arkham games. This influence becomes apparent between missions, allowing you to roam the open city in the Batmobile or glide through the skies. This was a particularly enjoyable aspect for me, as it offered a relaxed take on the expansive gameplay of Batman: Arkham, with playful moments where Gotham citizens stare and gawk as Batman and Robin sprint through the streets.
“Like us, our friends and colleagues at Rocksteady Studios have drawn upon some of that material in the past to make these really absorbing, thrilling environments,” said Smith. “We’ve also taken our own path in other ways, as players who have played… and loved the Arkham games. There’s some muscle memory that you want to reflect and build on, but we’re always trying to find a distinctive Lego way of making that gameplay accessible and friendly for the widest array of players.”
Combat and exploration maintain the simplicity characteristic of other Lego games, and admittedly, some encounters and open-world segments lack the mechanical depth found in other Batman titles. Nevertheless, it represents a commendable effort to enhance the always-accessible gameplay of the Lego series.
The subsequent mission highlighted a Lego adaptation of The Flying Graysons’ circus scene from Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever. I have a particular fondness for Batman Forever, and the balance of charm and wit in Legacy of the Dark Knight effectively recreated this scene as a puzzle-platforming sequence that complements the original film’s tone.
Whether it’s Star Wars, Indiana Jones, or DC Comics, TT Games has consistently excelled at reinterpreting classic characters and integrating their stories into the Lego universe. Thus far, Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight follows this trajectory, alongside the most ambitious attempt yet to broaden the scope and activities of an open-world Lego game. It’s essentially Batman: Arkham Knight for all ages.
Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight will be released on May 22, 2026, for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, with a Nintendo Switch 2 version coming later.
