After a lengthy development period, Apple appears to be finalizing its AI approach, with a central theme of providing users with choices. According to a recent report by Mark Gurman at Bloomberg, Apple intends to enable users to select from various third-party models when requesting generative AI tasks from their devices. This update is scheduled for iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27, according to sources familiar with the matter.

AI firms that choose to participate and integrate support into their App Store frameworks will be able to fuel Apple’s AI tools through a system internally referred to as Extensions. “Extensions allow you to access generative AI capabilities from installed apps on demand, through Apple Intelligence features such as Siri, Writing Tools, Image Playground and more,” a message in test versions of the software reportedly read.

Earlier this year, we received early indications that choice would be a key component of Apple’s strategy for Apple Intelligence. Bloomberg reported in March that Apple’s upcoming AI chatbot would support selecting from different AI models. And for the past few years, ChatGPT has been a growing part of Apple Intelligence, with OpenAI’s platform available to handle some gen-AI tasks.

Apple’s cautious approach to artificial intelligence has drawn significant attention and raised eyebrows. The current strategy seems to focus on providing users with flexibility and options rather than building an in-house model capable of directly competing with chatbots that have dominated the market in recent years. This represents an unconventional move for a company known for its closed ecosystem, but given the numerous delays and setbacks, this might be how Apple can finally become a meaningful participant in the AI discussion.
