While getting hands-on time with the iPhone Duo, blogger Nicolas Lellouche noticed a new setting in the display options called “Shift Left Edge.”
When turned on, the feature adds a small black strip along the left side of the outer display, effectively creating a fake bezel that pushes content away from the folding edge.
Apple’s iPhone Duo software describes the option as moving content “when you are using a case that partially covers the left edge of the outer display of your iPhone.”
In Lellouche’s short demo, enabling the setting appears to roughly double the width of the black border on the left edge of the iPhone Duo’s outer screen.
It is not yet clear which cases would require this option to be activated.
At launch, Apple is offering two first-party accessories for the iPhone Duo: the iPhone Duo Case and the iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand.
Without more hands-on time, it is difficult to determine whether these cases meaningfully overlap the left edge and block screen content, but it does not appear to be a problem. Apple may have added the feature for other cases, including potentially more rugged third-party designs.
More details should become available closer to launch. The iPhone Duo goes on sale next month, on October 23rd.
