Apple has ceased signing iOS 26.6.2, meaning that iPhone owners can no longer roll back to any pre‑iOS 27 build. Here’s the explanation.
Apple no longer signs iOS 26.6.2 installations
When someone attempts to install an iOS version on an iPhone, the device contacts Apple’s servers to verify that the build is still authorized for installation. This verification process is known as signing, and it applies whether you are upgrading or downgrading to any iOS release.
Since iOS updates typically address security flaws, Apple maintains a limited list of signed iOS versions. This stops users from installing or reverting to older builds that might still contain exploitable weaknesses.
As noted by Aaron Perris on X, Apple has stopped signing iOS 26.6.2 today. Consequently, users who are already on iOS 27 cannot downgrade to iOS 26.6.2, effectively ending the official path back to iOS 26.
It’s worth mentioning that, although Apple released iOS 26.7 last week, it does not presently provide an official restore image for that version, unlike the iPadOS 26.7 build.
In practical terms, iPhone owners still on an earlier iOS 26 release can update to iOS 26.7 over‑the‑air, but those already running iOS 27 cannot use that update to go back.
