Apple confirms a software patch for the iPhone 18 Pro reboot bug will arrive next week

Author: Digitio

On Monday, Digitio reported an issue where iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max units would freeze and reboot after a failed Face ID attempt. The problem appeared to be a software glitch rather than a hardware defect.

Apple has now told Digitio that a software update to resolve the issue is being prepared and should roll out early next week.

While not every user experienced the bug, it was fairly widespread according to social media chatter and Digitio reader reports.

During testing, Digitio reproduced the glitch on an iPhone 18 Pro by covering the face with a hand while trying to authenticate via Face ID to open the Passwords app. The device became unresponsive to touch and performed a hard reboot seconds later. A panic log can then be found in the iPhone Analytics section of Settings.

The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max feature a redesigned Face ID sensor layout, with the infrared camera relocated behind the display near the status‑bar clock, yielding a 25 % smaller visible Dynamic Island.

Earlier this week, some owners swapped their handsets at Apple stores, believing the rebooting was a hardware fault. With a software fix now confirmed, such replacements are unnecessary.

In a related move, Apple has also released watchOS 27.0.1 to address a random restart problem affecting Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4.
