Gemini is becoming more practical with a new update from Google that allows the chatbot to create files directly from the input field. Users simply need to specify their request, such as “make a budget,” and then click the export button to save the output in their preferred format.

Supported formats include PDF, TXT, RTF, and CSV, alongside Google’s own Docs, Slides, and Sheets. Additionally, Gemini can produce Microsoft Word files, Excel spreadsheets, Markdown, and LaTeX documents. LaTeX, a typesetting system for formatting scientific documents and journals, is widely used by researchers. Google’s support for this format is significant, especially as OpenAI recently released Prism, a dedicated app for formatting LaTeX journals. Based on the GIF provided by Google, Gemini can also create diagrams, which will be helpful for STEM students.

“Instead of copying, pasting and reformatting, this update will allow you to easily move your work into different applications,” Google says of the new feature. The company is rolling it out to all Gemini users, including those with individual Workspace accounts, worldwide. Google isn’t the first AI provider to offer more robust support for file exports. Anthropic’s Claude chatbot, for instance, has had the ability to edit and generate files, including Excel spreadsheets, since last September. Still, if you’re a frequent Gemini user, today’s update should come as a welcome addition all the same.
