Since iOS 5 arrived in 2011, the iPhone and iPad have featured Notification Center, a single chronological hub for alerts from all apps.
With iOS 27, Apple is fundamentally altering how users summon Notification Center on both devices.
iOS 27 releases on September 14 following a summer of beta testing. The interaction shifted slightly between the first two betas, but later developer builds confirm the change is here to stay — even though I would prefer an alternative.
Siri AI Claims the Top‑Center Swipe Gesture
By default, opening Notification Center works as before. However, once Siri AI is enabled, a key swipe gesture changes on iPhone and iPad.
One way to invoke Siri AI is by swiping down from the center of the top edge of the display — a motion that previously opened Notification Center.
You can still reach Notification Center by swiping down from the top‑left corner after enabling Siri AI. Alerts now animate in from that corner, visually guiding users to Notification Center’s reduced area.
Apple is heavily prioritizing Siri AI access in iOS 27, dedicating most of the top edge to the new Siri experience.
The last time Apple modified Notification Center access was when Control Center moved from a bottom swipe‑up to a top‑right swipe‑down on iPhone X, a pattern later unified across devices.
Notifications Now Reside in the Top‑Left Corner
Now Notification Center gets pushed to a corner. In iPadOS 27 beta 1, the space above Home Screen icons was largely reserved for invoking Siri AI, and the Notification Center trigger area even shrank if the AM/PM indicator or date were hidden.

Apple refined this in iPadOS 27 beta 2, creating more balanced zones on each side — roughly two app columns wide — with Notification Center on the left, Control Center on the right, and the remaining center for Siri.
After 15 years of ingrained habit, it will take time to judge whether this change is beneficial or should be revisited. Early feedback on the new Siri AI is overwhelmingly positive, and the idea that Siri is finally competent will also require adjustment.
After months with the new behavior, I would disable the center‑swipe‑for‑Siri if a toggle existed. Since there’s no such option, the only path is building new muscle memory to avoid the center.
