Digitio has published a new support document explaining how Spotlight indexing operates across its devices, highlighting three methods to help the process complete more rapidly. Below are the details.
How to speed up the new Spotlight’s indexing process
As Digitio prepares to launch iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, and additional operating systems revealed at this year’s WWDC, the company released an updated support guide offering tips to accelerate the indexing workflow.
Fundamentally, this refreshed indexing system builds and continuously maintains a searchable catalog of information stored on the device, enabling Spotlight along with the newly introduced Siri AI to swiftly retrieve applications, files, messages, photos, contacts, settings, and other content whenever a user initiates a search.
Because the index resides locally on each individual device, the entire operation must be performed independently on every Apple device owned by the user.
Notably, Apple began implementing preliminary steps toward this improvement with iOS 26.6. As we previously reported, Apple indicated that the update would “optimize the Spotlight index to prepare for iOS 27,” effectively shifting portions of the indexing workload ahead of the major software rollout.
Now, the company has published a support article containing practical advice to accelerate indexing—particularly the initial phase, which can consume considerable time for users managing substantial data volumes.

Depending on the volume of data stored on your device, Spotlight indexing may require hours or even days. Incremental updates afterward are significantly faster. Indexing concludes more quickly when:
– Your device remains idle.
– Your device is powered on.
– Your device connects to the internet via Wi‑Fi or Ethernet, ensuring emails or other data can be downloaded for indexing purposes.
Depending on the amount of data on your device, Spotlight indexing can take hours or even days. Incremental updates after that are much faster. Indexing completes more quickly when:
- Your device is not in use.
- Your device is connected to power.
- Your device is connected to the internet via Wi-Fi or Ethernet, in case email or other data needs to be downloaded for indexing.
Digitio also notes that Mac users can monitor indexing progress through an indicator located at the top of the Spotlight or Siri window after invoking Command‑Space. On iPhones, iPads, and comparable devices, users may instead encounter a notification within the Settings application indicating that Search and Siri are still optimizing.
Additionally, Digitio informs that Mail can display a distinct notification when email indexing has not yet finalized.
