Apple is set to launch a new iPad mini, marking the first significant update to the device in two years, with rumors suggesting a release as early as next month.
OLED Display
The most notable upgrade to the upcoming iPad mini will be its screen. According to multiple sources, the iPad mini 8 will adopt an OLED display.
This represents a major leap from the iPad mini’s current LCD panel. Users will benefit from deeper blacks, more vibrant colors, and improved contrast. The iPhone X introduced OLED screens in 2017, and the OLED iPad Pro followed in 2024.
However, one uncertainty remains whether the new iPad mini will support ProMotion technology for refresh rates up to 120Hz. A questionable rumor from last week suggested that the device may not include ProMotion and could be limited to 60Hz. Since no other sources have confirmed this, there is still hope that this speculation is incorrect.
New Chip
Currently, the iPad mini (released in October 2024) runs on Apple’s A17 Pro chip. The next-generation model is anticipated to feature either the A19 Pro or A20 Pro chip, delivering a substantial performance boost and possibly enabling advanced Siri AI capabilities in iOS 27.
Enhanced Water Resistance
Bloomberg reports that Apple has been testing a “revised design” for the iPad mini that includes water resistance similar to the iPhone.
While the inclusion of a water-resistant build is not guaranteed, it would significantly enhance the device’s durability. This feature would be particularly valuable for users who rely on the iPad mini as an e-reader, as water resistance is a key advantage of dedicated e-readers like the Kindle.
Advanced Speaker Technology
The iPad mini 8 may also debut Apple’s redesigned vibration-based speaker system, potentially making it the first device to incorporate this innovation.
This new speaker design could allow Apple to eliminate traditional speaker grilles, supporting efforts to make the device more water-resistant. Unlike the iPhone, which uses speaker holes combined with gaskets and adhesives for water resistance, this approach could streamline the design.
Release Date and Pricing
Bloomberg’s latest report indicates that Apple aims to launch the OLED iPad mini as early as October, describing it as the “most significant redesign of the iPad mini in five years.”
Details regarding pricing have not yet been announced. Apple recently raised the price of the current iPad mini from $499 to $599 (now available for $569 on Amazon). It remains unclear if the OLED-equipped version will carry an even higher price tag.
